Athcarne was a tower house built in the 1590 for William Bathe and his wife, Janet Dowdal. Later in that same century, a house was appended to the keep and later replaced in the 19th century. The tower is four stories while the addition is three stories. The ground floor of the tower has a vaulted roof. All the flooring for each level has been removed and the rubble surrounds the structure. There are some hauntings associated with this castle. Since it lies only 6 miles from the Battle of the Boyne, people claim to have heard cries of dying soldiers. One soldier is said to appear hanging from an oak tree on the grounds. The second haunting is the ghost of a young girl whose hands are dripping with blood. There doesn't seem to be an explanation for her. |
