The name Ardgillan comes from the Irish name of Ard Choill meaning High Wood. The area was heavily wooded before the manor was built. While Ardgillan is very imposing, it is not really a castle. It is a large country house done in the style of castle. Ardgillan was never used as a defensive location. The house was built in the 1738 and orginally named Prospect. The manor had been the property of the Taylors for two hundred year and in 1962, the estate was sold to a German national. The estate was later purchased by the Dublin County Council. There are regular tours and it is most known for its beautiful gardens and lovely walks. Inside the foyer is an impressive collection of unarmed weaponry. |
