The name Athgreany (achadh na gréine) means Field of the Sun. The circle is a Bronze Age circle (2000 BC) with 14 existing stones and one outlying stone. The outlying stone (the Piper) had a carving in the top. It was very worn and unrecognizable. A hawthorn tree sits on one side of the circle.

The circle is also referred to as Piper's Stones. The name referrs to a tale about a piper and a group of maidens. They were playing music and dancing on the Sabbath. As punishment for the sacriledge, they were all turned to stone.
