The High Cross of Moone (Ardchrois Mhaoine), stands about 17 feet in height. It has been reconstructed from the pieces found in the 19th century. The cross currently stands in the middle of an early monastery. The name Moen or Moin Cholm cille means the "walled enclosure" (bog) of St. Colmcille. Because of this, the monastery is believed to have been founded by St. Columba. The high cross was carved in the ninth century and probably displayed at the entrance to the monastery. Several biblical stories are depicted on the faces of the cross. A second cross was also found here, however, most of the pieces are missing. It is believed to have been carved at the same time as the one shown to the left. This second cross is known as a holed cross. It had a hole in the center where the shaft and arms connect. The opening may have been used to house a relic. |
