Clara (Clarah) Castle is an tower house built in the 15th century. It is believed to have been built by the Shortall family. This tower is one of the best preserved tower houses in Ireland. Clara Castle was lived in until 1905 with few changes to the structure. It stands five storeys high and has the original floor beams. The tower was also built for defense. There is a forecourt which protects the entrance to the tower. Gunloops are evident on either side of the gate along with steps to reach the top of the wall. Inside, there is a murder hole to help prevent unwanted visitors. There is also a secret room that is reached by going through the fake lavatory seat. |
