St. Mary's Church in Gowran, also referred to as Gowran Church was built to be a collegiate church in the 13th century on the site of an early monastery. It had the typical cross formation, but the transepts are no longer visible. A tower was inserted between the nave and the chancel in the 15th century. The chancel is still in service as a church. Inside, there is an ogham stone and a baptismal font. A collegiate church is served by a college, clerics who are not part of a monastery but live outside of the monasterys' confines. |
