Poulnabron

Poulnabrone is considered a portal tomb. Excavations in 1986 unearthed at least 33 burials in this location. The burials were dated between 3800 B.C. and 3100 B.C. The tomb is probably much older. All around the central set of stones were smaller stone slabs wedged into the ground limestone.

Poulnabrone comes from the Gaelic Poll na Brón meaning, hole of the quern. A quern is an old term for a stone hand mill used to grind grain.

This is a very popular stop for tourists and can be overwhelmed. It is still an awe inspiring portal tomb and well worth the visit.
