Poulawack was excavated in 1934 by archaeologists from Harvard. There was one central chamber with six cists inside the mound. A short distance from the cairn were the remains of a ring fort and souterrain. It is not clear how many persons were found in the excavation (between 14 and 18), however, carbon dating on the burial remains was shown to be 3400 B.C. Some

The cairn has diminished in size over time. It was surveyed in the early 1900's to be 200 ft in diameter and 12 feet high. Today the mound is closer to 70 feet in diameter and 8 feet high.

Carn Pholl an Bhaic means hole/cave of the angle/bend.
