The Archbishop of Dublin controlled the area during the 13th century. The manor of Shankill was used for overnight visits and defense. There was a small church built near the manor during that time also. The first structures were destroyed towards the end of 16th century when the native Irish fought against the Norman Irish.
The castle was rebuilt and occupied until 1683 by the Barnewell family. By 1782 the building was was considered ruined. The Aylwards took possession of Shankill and in the late 1800's it was passed along to the Toler-Aylwards. The place was sold in the 1980's. The canal in the rear of the manor has been refurbished along with the solar above the logia.
