This Newtown Castle is a 16th century tower built by the O'Briens in the Burren. The tower passed from the O'Briens to the O'Lochlainns, Princes of the Burren. The tower was inhabited until the late 1800's and then allowed to fall to ruin.

In the 1990's, the tower was restored and became the exhibition center for the Burren College of Art. The college was opened in 1994 for international students to study the fine arts.
