Mallahide Robert Talbot built the original structure in 1185. It has been added to and remodeled over the years. 1475 saw the addition of the great hall to the castle and in 1765, the circular towers were added. The minstral's gallery is still intact and the great hall is used for special occasions.

The Talbot family had lived in the castle until 1973, when the last Lord Talbot passed away. The family was evicted during Cromwells march through Ireland. From 1649 to 1660, the lands and castle were home to Miles Corbet. However, Miles Corbet signed a death warrant for Charles I and was hung, drawn and quartered. Malahide was then returned to the Talbot family.

Inside the castle are many displays of period furniture. One room held beautiful miniatures that journeyman woodworkers would create as part of a furniture catalog for future customers. Paintings of all sorts adorn the walls including family portraits.
