Leamaneh may have been derived from leim an eich, meaning "the Horse's Leap". Leamaneh Castle was originally a tower house built about 1480. The tower portion may have been built by Turlogh Donn, an independant king. In 1548, his son surrendered the keep to Henry VIII, and in return he was made the first Earl of Thomond and Baron Inchiquin. Leamaneh was granted to Donough O'Brien in 1550 and he was later hanged in 1582. Around 1640, a manor was built that attached to the western side of the tower by the Conor and Maire O'Brien. Maire, Maire Rua, O'Brien was noted for her red hair. Conor fell in battle to Cromwell. In an attempt to save the lands for her son, Maire married a Cromwell soldier. She still lost the lands, however, they recovered most of the properties by 1674. By the end of the 1700's, the estate had fallen to ruin. These ruins are on private land. |
