The existing tower was built in the 15th century. It served as a defensive tower and gatehouse. The structure was built upon the same site founded for a monastic settlement. The settlement was established in 1257 by the second Baron of Offaly (Maurice Fitzgerald) for the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem. There are remains of a small church nearby. Parts of the surrounding defensive wall are still standing also. In 1541, the castle was taken from the church and granted to Sir John Alen. The Earl of Tyreconnel acquired it in 1669. It was sold to the Hollow Sword Blade Company in 1703 who then sold it to Sir William Fownes in 1704. It was sold again in the 19th century to the Kennedys Of Johnstown-Kennedy. The tower is five storeys with the first and fifth floors having vaulted ceilings. The floors between the second and fifth do not exist anymore.
