Granagh Castle is situated at a strategic location along the Suir to prevent raiding Norsemen from invading Waterford. It is believed that the original structure was erected by Braum since it was once known as Don Braum. These ruins are from the later fortification built by Le Poers, a Norman, in the 13th century.
The family, Le Poers, held the site until Eustace was executed for treason in 1375. The crown then granted the second Earl of Ormond custody.
A side note: Arnold Le Poer wielded power in Waterford until he became enamored of Alice Kyteler, the Kilkenny witch. He died in prison in 1328.
The Earls of Ormond, Butler family, appeared to have added to the castle in the 14th and 15th centuries. They held the castle until Cromwell came through and partially destroyed it around 1650.
Some parts of the castle have been restored. The restorations occurred in 1824 and again in 1925.
Caislean Greannach means Castle of the Gravelly Place.
The eighth Earl of Ormond, Piers Duagh, was married to Margaret Fitzgerald (Mairead NiGearoid). Margaret imported weavers and tapestry makers from Flanders to settle in Kilkenny.
A plaque that reads, "This ruin once the favourite residence of Máiréad Moore wife of Piers, 8th Earl of Ormonde. This Castle a 15th Century fortress was taken by assault by Cromwellian forces by Axtel in 1650."
