This structure was built in 1520 by the O'Hynes Clan. The location received it's name from the nearby Fort of Guaire where the Kings of Connaught ruled during the 7th century. The castle was passed to the Mayor of Galway and in 1642, the Martyns came into possesion of the structure. Restoration started in 1924 when it was purchased by Oliver St. John Gogarty, surgeon. In 1954, the castle once again changed hands and Lady Amptill completed the restoration of the castle. It is now under the management of Shannan Development and open to the public. |
