Dublin City was founded by the Vikings in 841. Brian Boru defeated the Vikings in 1014. The city was gradually controlled by the Kings of Ireland until 1170 when the Normans took over. Henry II claimed the town in 1171 and made it the center of the English administration in Ireland.
Dublin Castle was built on a site used by the Vikings as a stronghold in 1204. The castle has been added to and modified extensively. It is situated in the center of a block and surrounded by modern buildings. The chapel is still distinctive along with a central courtyard. It is a very large structure and still in use for State functions.
The name Dublin comes from the Irish dubh linn meaning dark pool.
