Craggaunowen Castle was built around 1550 by MacNamara. Sometime in the 17th century after the kingdoms of Ireland were replaced, the roof was removed from the tower and abandoned. Restoration of the tower was completed in 1965 and the ground floor extension was added to house John Hunt's collection of antiquities. The land surrounding the castle has been used to recreate different types of structures and living conditions in Ireland. A ring fort was built along with several items within it's perimeter; cooking pit, souterrain, and a pole lathe. |
