Cahir Castle

Cahir Castle gets its' name from the original Cathair Dhun lascaigh, meaning Stone Fortress of the Fishery. It is situated on an island in the River Suir. The river has been mostly rerouted so that the castle doesn't appear to be in the middle.

The castle was originally built in the 13th century, but has undergone many changes over the years. Philip of Worcester was in possesion of the lands at that time. The Butler family was given the area in the 1375. It fell into ruins during the 18th century. The Butler family started some repairs between 1846 and 1849 to create a comfortable living space. Cahir was taken into State care in 1964 and has undergone extensive restoration.
