Ballyneale or Baile Ui Neill translates to "Home of the O'Neills". Conn O'Neill built Ballyneile in the late 1500's as a fortified manor house. Originally the structure was a Tudor style manor house with towers at the corners for defense. The O'Neills had to forfeit their lands after the Cromwellian wars. Cromwell formally received Ballyneale about 1691 from Walter Walsh.
In 1666, Captain John Shaw had control of the castle and lands. The Shaws controlled the area until the end of the 18th century. The Scully family took over the castle and was there until the 1970's. The castle is a part of a working farm and the family lives in a separate house and maintains the remains of Ballyneile.
