The tower was built around 1490. The MacDonnells owned the lands untill the 1800's when it was purchased by Sir Guinness. The castle was briefly captured in 1596 by Brabazon, Clanrickard and Darcy. Upon hearing the approach of Red Hugh O'Donnell, they abandoned the castle.
