Dermot the Hermit built a cell around 500 A.D. in which to live. The Vikings raided in 841 and 867. By the 10th century, a monastic school, founded by St Diarmuid, had developed around it. It is reported that Cormac O'Cuilleanain, the King Bishop of Cashel, was buried here after the a battle in 908. A round tower and some crosses remain from that era.
The town was originally called Diseart Diarmada which is Irish for Dermot's Hermitage and later changed to Castledermot.
