This area was established as a monastery for the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem. It was founded in 1257 by Maurice Fitzgerald (Baron of Offaly).

Kilteel Tower was built later in the 15th century. Parts of the surrounding defensive wall are still standing also.

The remains of the medieval church has several carved cornerstones. There is the lower part of a Romanesque arch. This is the only one in Ireland that has figures carved on it.
