Kilteel Churchyard

This area was established as a monastery for the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem. It was founded in 1257 by Maurice Fitzgerald (Baron of Offaly).

Kilteel Tower was built later in the 15^th century. Parts of the surrounding defensive wall are still standing also.

The remains of the medieval church has several carved cornerstones. There is the lower part of a Romanesque arch. This is the only one in Ireland that has figures carved on it.
